The Biggest Opportunity Opening in Rara: Hotel Business
A scene repeats itself again and again at Rara National Park - a scene that reveals the reality of Nepal's most beautiful destination.
A family endures a difficult journey to reach Rara - first a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then another flight to Talcha Airport, carved into the mountainside. Then comes a two-hour trek through forests of sal trees and rhododendrons.
They round the final bend, and there it is - Nepal's largest lake, 167 meters deep, 5.1 kilometers long, spread beneath the blue sky. It feels unbelievable. The wife pulls out her phone to capture the moment. There's no network. The children ask, "Where will we stay tonight?"
- All the rooms in the lakeside hotels have been booked for weeks. Currently, only 2 hotels are operating near Rara Lake.

👉 This is where Rara's real problem begins. But this problem also opens a new possibility - and that is the hotel business.
The Numbers Speak: Tourists are Here, But Accommodation is Not
In the fiscal year 2024-25, 16,589 visitors came to Rara within 11 months. That's up from 14,600 in 2023 and 11,468 in 2021.
👉 Explore the growth of tourism in Rara National Park
Two hotels. Nearly 20,000 annual visitors. Even assuming those hotels run at 100% capacity every single night of the season, they cannot possibly accommodate more than a fraction of these tourists. The rest? They're camping, cutting trips short, or sleeping hungry.
But ... the lack of proper accommodation and food options there, you don't feel like coming back.

Lack of Quality Hotels: The Biggest Bottleneck in Rara
Currently, only a very limited number of hotels are operating near Rara Lake. During peak season, they fill up almost completely.
- The interesting thing is that tea shops, lodges, and basic hotels in other areas around Rara are gradually increasing.
- According to local business owners, many tourists do not want to stay there.
- Tourists don't come just to "see" Rara. They come to experience Rara.
- They want to wake up and see the lake from their window, sit by the lakeside after sunset, experience the Himalayan peace at night, and watch the morning fog settle over the water.
- If the accommodation is too far from the lake, that experience remains incomplete.
👉
The real demand is: "Accommodation near Rara Lake." And this is where Rara's biggest business opportunity is beginning to open up.
Rara National Park: Tourist Projections for 2026
Looking at the current growth trend, the estimated numbers are:
- Cautious scenario: 22,800
- Realistic scenario: 24,500
- Optimistic scenario: 26,300
👉 The heaviest pressure is likely to occur during April–May (Baisakh–Jestha) and October (Ashoj–Kartik).
👉
This number could increase even more if there is improved road access, increased flight frequency at Talcha Airport, and a stronger promotion of Rara through reels, YouTube, and TikTok.
Rara National Park: Hotel Requirements
Let's look at one example.
- Tourist number in May 2024: 2,261
- Average stay per tourist: 2 nights
- Total guest-nights (demand): 2,261*2=4,522
- One hotel's capacity (20 rooms × 2 persons × 30 nights): 1,200 guest-nights
Occupancy Rate | Guest-Nights Managed Per Hotel | Required Hotels (4,522 ÷ Capacity) |
|---|---|---|
60% | 720 | ≈ 6.3 → 7 hotels |
80% | 960 | ≈ 4.7 → 5 hotels |
100% | 1,200 | ≈ 3.8 → 4 hotels |
What is the reality?
- Rara currently has only 2 hotels.
- When tourist numbers are high, hotels fill to 100%.
- At 100% occupancy, 4 hotels are still needed.
- Currently, there are 2 → shortage of 2 hotels (even at full capacity)
- This becomes even more severe in months like April, May, and October.
Occupancy Rate | Hotels Needed | Current Hotels | Shortage |
|---|---|---|---|
60% | 7 | 2 | 5 |
100% | 4 | 2 | 2 |
👉 Rara urgently needs 2–5 new quality hotels to meet current demand. This gap is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs.
Business Decision:
If environmental zoning policies remain strict, think of eco-lodges, trekking lodges, and community homestays in surrounding villages.
If carefully regulated hotel restrictions around designated zones near Rara Lake are lifted, there will be clear opportunities for eco-friendly boutique hotels, premium lodges, and lakeside hospitality ventures.
What Type of Hotels Can Succeed in Rara?
Rara is not a mass tourism destination. Rather, it is an area with greater potential to become a premium eco-tourism destination. The following models, in particular, show strong potential:
- Eco-lodge
- Boutique hotel
- Premium cabin stay
- Lakeside retreat
- Sustainable luxury stay
- Community-based eco hospitality
Final Insight
In Rara, demand already exists, but supply is extremely low. This gives early investors the following advantages:
- The chance to secure good locations
- The ability to set premium pricing
- The opportunity to build repeat visitors
- The platform to establish their own brand
👉 Today's two hotels cannot handle tomorrow's crowd of tourists - whoever builds a good hotel first will become the king of Rara's new tourism era.
