From Weed to Wealth: The Complete Guide to the Nettle Powder Business in Nepal
Data Insight

Nettle powder (Sisno Powder) has not only proven useful for health but has also emerged as a product with immense potential for income generation. Made by drying nettles, which are easily found in the Himalayan and hilly regions, this powder can be produced with low investment, offering a great opportunity to start a business at the local level.

With the growing demand for natural and nutritious products, nettle powder appears to be a sustainable source of income for farmers, young entrepreneurs, and local groups. Furthermore, packed with benefits ranging from blood purification to diabetes control, this green powder is now being referred to as "Green Gold."

From 10 Nrs. of Nettle to 2,000 Nrs. of Powder:  The Potential Shown by the Value Chain

Available information indicates that economic transformation is possible through the nettle business. Although the price of raw nettle leaves is very low in the initial stage, ranging from Rs. 10 to Rs. 80 per kilogram, the value of this same product can rise to between Rs. 500 and over Rs. 2,000 after processing. This vast difference clearly demonstrates the power of value addition.

We never imagined that this weed could have such significant economic value. Rather, nettle is a crop full of potential.

Shanta Lama - Kavre cited in UNDP 7/10/2020

In the journey from 2019 to 2025, nettle is no longer just for household consumption or a wild plant — it has become established as a commercial product. Particularly in areas like Tehrathum and Kavre, the use of technology (solar dryers, grinders) and training has successfully helped move the product toward higher-value markets.

On the other hand, even in remote places like Jumla, the potential to generate significant income from small-scale enterprises has become evident. These examples all point to one conclusion: the success of the nettle business does not depend on raw leaves, but on processing and marketing.

Let's understand the dynamics.

  • The price difference itself is the biggest lesson. Comparing Dolakha and Tehrathum, the price of raw leaves ranges from Rs. 10–15 to Rs. 80, but the price of the powder ranges from Rs. 500 to over Rs. 2,000.

We make 5 kg of powder from 30 kg of fresh nettle and sell it for Rs. 500 per kg.

  • Urban market is the key.  The fact that the highest price (Rs. 2,000+) is achieved in Tehrathum is directly linked to market access, packaging, and quality improvement.

We make 1 kg of powder from 9 kg of fresh leaves, and the cost comes to around Rs. 3,500.

  • Even in rural areas, there is a market for this product. Even when selling at a lower price (Rs. 250–400), a woman from Jumla earns up to Rs. 120,000 annually. This confirms the 'low entry barrier' of the nettle business.

Although nettle is looked down upon in the village, I am earning good money by selling nettle powder.  I sent 3 quintals of nettle powder out this year.

Even more importantly, nettle cultivation can be used as an 'alternative crop',  especially in areas where monkeys and other wildlife are destroying traditional farming.

The profit lies in 'processing + positioning'.

If the product can be standardized and presented to the international market as a 'Nepali Organic Superfood', nettle powder carries immense potential in the export market. Chaite Community Forest in Tehrathum has already received interest from international buyers, although exports have not yet begun.

Nettle Powder Around the World:  A Journey from Soup to Shampoo, from Tea to Capsules

You might wonder - what is the global use of nettle powder like? You'll be surprised by the answer. Today, the ways people around the world are using nettle show that it is not just an ordinary plant but a 'multipurpose herbal superfood'.

  • Food & Beverages: In Scandinavian restaurants, nettle soup is a 'winter special'. In Ireland and Iran, it is an integral part of traditional meals. Nettle tea is available in health stores in the UK and Germany. Nettle smoothies are becoming popular at juice bars in America. Nettle pasta is also available in Italy.
  • Supplements: In the United States alone, sales of nettle-containing supplements (capsules, tablets) increased by 28% in 2023. Why? Because research has shown that nettle helps with joint pain, diabetes, and prostate health. Many athletes have started taking nettle powder to reduce muscle pain.
  • Hair & Skin Care: In Europe and Japan, nettle shampoo and nettle conditioner are popular — they reduce hair loss. Nettle cream is used to reduce eczema and skin inflammation. French beauty brands use nettle extract in their 'natural line'.
  • Textile & Paper Industry: Thread is made from nettle bark. Hand-woven fabric from Nepal's 'allo' (like Himalayan nettle) sells in international markets as 'Himalayan jute'. Eco-friendly clothing is also made from nettle fiber in Germany.
Let us be clear: This is a golden opportunity for Nepal. We have the highest quality organic Himalayan nettle in the world. If we can improve processing technology, meet international quality standards, and build the 'Nepali Organic Nettle' brand, this small-scale industry can transform our hill economy.

Nettle Powder Business: Real Potential for High Income with Low Investment

The real value of nettle is not seen in its raw state, but after processing. Although the price of raw nettle leaves is generally Rs. 10–80 per kg, when this same nettle is dried and made into powder, its value reaches from Rs. 500 to over Rs. 2,000. This clearly demonstrates the importance of value addition.

  • Karmakali Rawal from Jumla earned Rs. 120,000 by selling 300 kgs of nettle powder in a single year (Kantipur 14/08/2025).
  • The Bolbari Nettle Farm in Dolakha is producing 15–20 kg of powder per day and conducting business worth hundreds of thousands of rupees annually (The Kathmandu Post 26/4/2023).
  • The Chaite Community Forest in Tehrathum is producing 5–6 kg of powder per day and selling it at Rs. 2,000 per kg (Kantipur 27/9/2025).

These examples show that with proper processing and market access, the nettle powder business is an enterprise that provides high income with low investment.

Note: The production cost is assumed to be Rs. 120 per kg (see calculation method below).

Profit Calculation Example (Medium Scenario):

Profit per kg = Selling price – Production cost

  • Profit per kg = 800 – 120 = Rs. 680; Monthly total profit = 40 × 680 = Rs. 27,200

  • Annual total profit = 27,200 × 12 = Rs. 326,400

Conclusion: Even with average levels of production and sales, a monthly income of approximately Rs. 25,000–30,000 and an annual income of over Rs. 300,000 is possible.

Calculation Method for Production Cost of Rs. 120 per kg

Cost Item

Rs. 90
Dolakha: Rs. 10–15 per kg
Drying cost

Total Production Cost
1 kg of powder
Rs. 120
Important Note: This Rs. 120 per kg is the minimum production cost, based on the fresh leaf price of Rs. 10–15 per kg in Dolakha. If you purchase leaves at Rs. 80 per kg, the cost will be higher. However, most successful entrepreneurs either collect the leaves themselves (like Karmakali from Jumla) or source them cheaply from local women, making Rs. 120 a realistic minimum cost.
Please keep in Mind: The income from nettle powder depends on the level of processing and the distance to market access. The farther the market, the greater the income.
  • Do not sell raw leaves; sell powder.
  • Do not sell in the village; take it to the city.
  • Do packaging and branding.

Nettle Powder Business:  Key Risks and Mitigation Measures

Although there is high income potential in the nettle powder business, every business carries risks. If these risks are identified in time and appropriate measures are taken, losses can be avoided, and the business can be made sustainable.

Risk of Irregular Supply of Raw Nettle Leaves: Nettle is a seasonal plant - it is scarce in winter. The number of people collecting nettles from the forest is uncertain. Natural disasters (landslides, excessive rainfall, drought) can reduce nettle production.

  • Cultivate it yourself.
  • Create a multi-source supply chain.
  • Create seasonal storage facility.

Risk of Quality Deterioration During Processing: If nettle is not dried properly (if moisture remains), the powder develops mold.  If dust or dirt gets mixed in, the quality of the powder deteriorates.  Drying at excessively high temperatures destroys nutrients.

  • Adopt proper drying techniques.
  • Conduct quality checks.
  • Look for training before initiating the business.

Risk of No Market (Sales Channel): If the produced powder does not sell, the business collapses. Most small entrepreneurs look for a market only after producing. Middlemen buy at low prices and cheat producers. Transportation problems arise when reaching city markets.

  • Secure sales guarantees before production.
  • Adopt online sales channels.
  • Sell through cooperatives or groups

Price Volatility and the Grip of Middlemen: The price of nettle powder is not stable in the market. Middlemen buy cheap in the village and sell expensively in the city. Entrepreneurs are not aware of the actual market price. With many sellers, competition can drive prices down.

  • Keep track of market prices.
  • Eliminate middlemen and sell directly.
  • Set prices strategically for sales.

Lack of Processing Machines and Maintenance Problems: Machines are necessary to produce good-quality powder. Grinders, dryers, and sealing machines are expensive. In villages, there are electricity problems, and if a machine breaks down, there is no proper maintenance facility. Small entrepreneurs cannot afford expensive machines.

  • Seek support from local government and organizations.
  • Start on a small scale.
  • Use a common service center.
Three concrete understandings:
  • The demand for natural products never decreases.
  • The importance of sustainable farming is increasing day by day.
  • New markets (beauty, supplements, tea) are continuously opening up.

Final Conclusion: Is There a Future in the Nettle Powder Business?

The nettle powder business is a highly promising green enterprise for Nepal. It can be started with low cost, offers high value addition, has growing demand in global markets, and benefits from Nepal's geographical and organic advantages — making it highly profitable in the long term.

  • For Farmers: Start trial cultivation on 1–2 Ropani of land. Join a local organic group or cooperative and begin the organic certification process. Obtain information about nettle seeds or saplings and plant management suitable for your locality from the nearest Agriculture Knowledge Center. Do not sell 100% of total production fresh; turn 20–30% into powder - this adds value and increases income. Join with a group (farmer group/cooperative) to purchase a shared solar dryer - this reduces costs and improves quality.
  • For Entrepreneurs: Explore the possibility of operating a small-scale processing unit (solar dryer, grinder, packaging machine). Produce nettle powder, nettle tea, nettle capsules, or natural dye. Build a brand: "Nepali Organic Nettle Powder -Himalayan Herbal Superfood." Use Daraz, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, or direct export channels for sales. Make long-term purchase agreements with farmer groups - this ensures a regular supply of raw leaves.
  • For InvestorsLook for investment opportunities in processing equipment (solar dryers, grinders, packaging machines). Invest in storage facilities (cold storage/dry storage) - dried nettle leaves can be stored for long periods. Invest in export infrastructure (certification, lab testing, transport management). Support small farmer groups with solar dryers - this is an excellent option for long-term investment.

The future of nettle powder is bright - but this future will not come on its own. We must create it ourselves. If Nepal invests now in quality certification, modern processing technology, and international market connections, then within the next decade, nettle powder will undoubtedly be on Nepal's list of major herbal exports.
